What I needed
you to know.

Letter 013 NEW

I Deleted the Draft.

I used to write paragraphs.

So many paragraphs.

Things I needed people to understand.

Things I needed people to admit.

Things I thought I could explain well enough that somehow the ending would change.

Most of them never got sent.

Maybe that’s where they belong.

DRAFT 01TO THE PERSON WHO STARTED ALL OF THIS

I was fourteen.

At the time, neither of us knew you were setting a standard.

You were teaching me things about fear, my body, and what I was supposed to tolerate that would take me years to unlearn.

For years, I wrote explanations for things that never should have required one.

This isn’t one of them.

What you did was yours.

What happened afterward became mine to survive.

DELETE.
DRAFT 02TO THE PERSON WHO SHOWED ME HOW MUCH CAN HAPPEN IN FOURTEEN DAYS

Fourteen days.

Three times I was left wondering how far you were willing to go.

It didn’t take years.

You didn’t need years.

Fourteen days was enough to change the way I understood danger.

For a long time, I tried to find softer language for what happened.

There isn’t any.

I got out.

That is the only ending you get to have in my story.

DELETE.
DRAFT 03TO THE PERSON WHO HAD YEARS

Yours looked different.

There wasn’t one fourteen-day period I could point to.

There were years.

Years of words.

Years of learning which version of myself would cause the least trouble.

Years of slowly questioning things about myself I had once known.

It took me longer to recognize damage when I couldn’t point to where it hurt.

I can now.

DELETE.
DRAFT 04TO THE PERSON WHO LEFT

I spent so long wondering how you could know how much being left would hurt me and leave anyway.

I wrote versions where I was angry.

Versions where I pretended I wasn’t.

Versions where I asked what happened.

Versions where I promised I wouldn’t be upset if you would just tell me the truth.

Eventually I realized your absence was an answer too.

Not the one I wanted.

But an answer.

DELETE.
DRAFT 05TO THE CHILDHOOD FRIEND I EVENTUALLY DATED

Sometimes I don’t know which version of you I miss.

The person I loved?

The person I dated?

Or the friend I had before either of us knew we could lose each other like this?

There was supposed to be a version of this where the relationship didn’t work and somehow the history survived.

Instead, I lost you twice.

Once as the person I loved.

And once as the person I thought I’d always know.

DELETE.
DRAFT 06TO THE PEOPLE WHOSE HURT I WILL PROBABLY ALWAYS REMEMBER

I’m doing better.

That doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten what you did.

Healing did not erase my memory.

Forgiveness didn’t require amnesia.

Moving forward didn’t require me to rewrite what happened so everyone could feel better about it.

Some things became part of my story.

I just stopped letting them be the ending.

DELETE.
DRAFT 07TO THE PERSON WHO KEPT WAITING FOR ME TO BECOME SOMEONE ELSE

I’m not her.

I don’t know how many different ways I could have proved that to you.

I had things to work on.

I made mistakes.

I owed apologies.

But I wasn’t responsible for what someone else had done before I arrived.

I can admit where I was wrong without accepting things about me that were never true.

DELETE.
DRAFT 08TO THE PEOPLE WHO SAID SOMETHING BUT OFFERED NOTHING

You told me I needed help.

Maybe I did.

But you never texted.

You never called.

You never asked what kind of help I needed.

You never asked if I was okay.

You noticed enough to have an opinion.

Just not enough to show up.

I didn’t need another person standing at a distance telling me I was struggling.

I needed someone willing to come closer.

DELETE.
DRAFT 09TO THE FRIEND I KEPT MAKING EXCUSES FOR

I know you’re busy.

I wrote that sentence for you so many times that eventually it started sounding like something you had said.

I understood.

I adjusted.

I lowered my expectations.

I made your absence easier for both of us.

Eventually I wondered why understanding you always seemed to require abandoning myself.

DELETE.
DRAFT 10TO THE PERSON WHO CAME BACK TOO LATE

There was a time when seeing your name would have changed my entire day.

You missed it.

There was a time I would have accepted almost any explanation.

You missed that too.

You don’t get to skip the part where you hurt me and arrive years later at the part where we’re okay.

Time passing isn’t the same thing as making amends.

DELETE.
DRAFT 11TO THE PERSON I WANTED TO MAKE PROUD

I wish you knew how hard I worked to become someone you might finally be proud of.

For a long time, I thought becoming enough would feel like finally earning something from you.

Then I became proud of myself.

It wasn’t the same feeling.

It was better.

DELETE.
DRAFT 12TO THE PERSON I ACTUALLY OWED AN APOLOGY

I was wrong.

I’m sorry.

That one I sent.

Because deleting the draft isn’t the same thing as refusing accountability.

Sometimes the message really does belong to us.

Sometimes we hurt people.

Sometimes growing means saying so without adding a paragraph explaining why it wasn’t entirely our fault.

I learned that too.

DRAFT 13TO MYSELF

I’m sorry.

For all the times I knew something hurt and convinced myself I was overreacting.

For every instinct I argued with.

For every boundary I moved because I was afraid someone would leave.

For every person I understood more generously than I understood myself.

For believing that being loved required me to become easier to hurt.

For being embarrassed by the times I went back.

For blaming myself for not knowing at fourteen what it would take me years to learn.

For expecting myself to recover faster.

For thinking healing meant becoming the person I was before any of this happened.

I don’t need to become her again.

I know things she didn’t know.

I know how to leave.

I know how to stay gone.

I know that being alone and being abandoned are not the same thing.

I know that someone’s inability to love me well is not an assignment to love them harder.

And I finally know something I spent years asking other people to tell me:

I believe you.

You didn’t deserve all of it just because you weren’t perfect through any of it.

You can stop explaining now.

This one I’m keeping.

SENT. ✓

And maybe that’s the difference now.

Most of those paragraphs weren’t apologies.

They were arguments for my own humanity.

Please understand me.

Please believe me.

Please choose me.

Please admit it.

Please care.

Please tell me why.

Please become the person I keep writing these messages to as though you exist somewhere underneath the person you keep showing me.

I thought there was a perfect combination of words that would finally make everything click.

So I kept editing.

Clearer.

Kinder.

Less angry.

More reasonable.

Shorter.

Longer.

Less emotional.

More forgiving.

Until eventually I understood:

It wasn’t that I hadn’t explained myself well enough.

Some people understood.

They simply weren’t going to give me the answer I wanted.

So I still write things.

I just don’t send all of them anymore.

I let the words exist.

I let myself mean them.

Twelve drafts could stay deleted.

There was only one person who needed to hear the last one.

Me.

And finally,

I sent it.

SOME THINGS I NEEDED TO SAY.

Some people never needed to hear them.

Did something here feel familiar?

Mine does.

Anonymous. No account. Just a small way to say: I recognized something here.
